Combination workouts that mix upper body high-load work (like pull ups) with ground work are a great way to develop the kind of functional strength that delivers high-performance when you need it. Now Mercs do need to keep in shape at all times and it's kinda hard to carry a gym with you so if all you need is a handy branch or overhead pipe, or your handy monkey bars in the park, plus your body, you will never feel you can't train like you want to.
